500 million plastic straws are thrown away each day, just in the US alone, but imagine there are seven continents with 195 countries and 7.7 billion people around the world that contributes to the increase of pollution in the ocean by using plastic straws. Though some people might say that they do not contribute to this pollution because they do not discharge their plastics in the ocean, yet still our plastic wastes do end up in the ocean when our plastics end up in a landfill.
Our constant use of plastics is rapidly depleting aquatic life. Ellen MacArthur stated that “By the year 2050, there is expected to be more plastic waste than fish in the ocean.”.Plastic straws contain BPA (Bisphenol A), which is an industrial chemical that is colorless, and poorly soluble in water. When the fish are exposed to the toxins, they acquire them, then we eat the fish, taking in a much higher and stronger concentration of BPA via biomagnification. Aside from the dangers that this plastic poses to humans, the effects they have on aquatic life is detrimental. The straws are ingested by different species of sea life that then suffocate on the straws and killing the animals. Fish in the North Pacific Ocean alone ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic each year. Are we just going to sit there and wait until the ocean we once knew will become just a story that we will tell our grandkids?
